Fit for purpose
We purchased these tyres for a trip to Mutawintji and Mungo National Parks so there were varied road conditions. They were not noisy on the highway and worked well off road in sand. Unfortunately we punctured one on a small tree branch which damaged the steel belts and had to buy a new tyre after we got back.

Great performance - Disappointed they are now discontinued
I ve managed to clock up 70,000kms on these and have always felt they performed very well in all situations, this includes daily urban, freeway, gravel roads and light snow fall/blanket alpine. I can be quite aggressive or light foot driver, but I ve always felt they held up through corners and under braking very well. I was disappointed to find that they are not discontinued which left me to question how the replacement Verde All Seasons would perform.

Best highway performance of any SUV tyre without doubt.
I have driven many SUV s in my time and many different tyres. Like most of us, most of my KM,s are on the highway. This is where Scorpion STR s really excel. I don t hang around as I need to travel long distances on 2nd rate roads in minimum times. So high speeds, fast cornering, heavy braking and turbo acceleration to pass road trains etc. I inherited the first set on a BMW X3 turbo diesel at 66k. I am up to 115K and I can t fault them. Thinking they must be due for replacement I bought 4 more at a bargain price but I can t wear the old ones out. They have also been on sand passing other bogged vehicles in a beach access cutting (at full tyre pressure). What more could you ask? One more thing, watch your tyre wear pattern closely when new and adjust your pressures to get a flat wear pattern right across the tread. It helps mileage and performance greatly. I currently run 46 front and 44 rear + or - depending on load. Don t just run at tyre placard pressures or you ll be disappointed. They are set for most comfortable ride, not performance. And if you really want to hit rough tracks go to the ATR s.

Poor grip
I don t understand people‰Ûªs fixation with tyre wear. Yes, it is an expense, but compared to the price of the vehicle and fuel, and the value of your life, the cost is negligible. The primary objective of the tyre is to keep 2000 odd kg, travelling at 100 kph (lots of momentum!) in contact with terra firma. They are your (or your wife and kids ), only link between terra firma and celestial eternity. So when I review a tyre, the ONLY thing that matters is grip. Especially in the wet. So, by my criteria, the Pirelli Scorpions are a police knock on the door, at your next of kin‰Ûªs home, waiting to happen! I have learnt that the Pajero traction control works well. It gets plenty of practice every time I drive in the wet: accelerating and cornering. OK, I do drive cars pretty hard. So if you are plodder, you will not notice the lack of grip - until one day when it really matters, and you try and overcome that momentum in a hurry when a car or roo decides to hop out in front of you. Having tried many tyres over the years, these are the second worst I have ever tried (the BF Goodrich All Terrain are worse). I am talking about road grip. Our Pajero does mainly highway driving, including towing. Very little off road. Even the stock standard Yokohama Geolanders that came with it were better. By far, the best tyres I have had, have been Coopers ATR. I‰Ûªm throwing the Pirelli death traps off and going back to Coopers. Will try the new AT3. I hope they still have grip and have not yielded to the market s obsession with tread wear. Coopers seem to achieve longevity through depth of tread rather than compound hardness. Those that know anything about tyres, know that grip = soft rubber compound = rapid wear (watch the Grand Prix). Deep tread = more rubber = more expensive, but worth the money. Pirelli = brand name = expensive, does NOT = quality and safety.
