Nokian Tyres

Best known for its winter tyres, Nokian is a tyre manufacturer based in Nokia, Finland. The company produces and supplies tyres for passenger cars, trucks, and special heavy machinery. Nokian branded tyres are sold in over 60 countries, and are primarily marketed in areas with demanding driving conditions, such as those with snow, forest and changing seasons.

Although Nokian Tyres Limited was established in 1988, the company has actually a long and rich history that goes all the way back to 1898 when Finnish Rubber Works was founded. Car tyre production officially started in 1932, and the world’s first winter tyre, the Weather tyre, was made in 1934. Since then, Nokian continued its legacy of innovation.

Some of its most notable achievements and innovations include the following:

  • In 2006, Nokian offered the first radial forestry tyre, the Nokian Forest Rider, for cut-to-length forestry machines.

  • In 2014, the brand introduced a concept tyre with pop-out studs, a first in the world. The Hakkapeliitta tyre.

  • In 2015, the Nokian WR D4 became the first winter tyre in the world to offer wet grip in the EU tyre label’s best A class.

  • In 2016, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 winter tyre won the Tyre Technology of the Year 2016. The tyre is tailored for BMW’s electric car.
